"The Moldy Touch" is the 22nd episode of Season 1 of Chowder and the 22nd episode of the series overall.

Plot[]

The episode starts with Chowder, Schnitzel and Mung Daal making Nomidoes (giant dominos made of meat), but Chowder ends up ruining them by knocking them over. Afterwards, Mung and Schnitzel begin to start over with Chowder standing in the corner holding a spoon. Unfortunately, the spoon slips out of his hand and hits the Nomidoes, causing them to fall again. Mung then sends Chowder to his room, leaving the boy completely distraught.

As they are about to start again, they find that the fizzel spice has run out and the only place to get more is the cellar. Since Mung and Schnitzel are too scared, they send Chowder to go down. Chowder is excited at first, but gets scared when swarms of rats run out and a giant talking one runs to freedom. Chowder tries to talk himself out of goin in, Mung quickly catches and tosses him in the cellar, while getting Schnitzel to lock it after he tries to run. Chowder protests, but is then convinced that he’s being a great help by doing this task.

While in the cellar, Chowder is still timid, but proceeds to track down the fizzle spice. What he did manage to find is a bottle with a mold creature inside named Funjl. The small mold pixie begs Chowder to let him out by convincing him that he’s "way better than any other spice around!". Chowder then immediately runs out of the cellar with the creature.

That night, Chowder sneaks out of his room, into the kitchen, and lets Funjl out of the bottle. Once out, the creature spits a wad of mold onto Chowder’s hand. After touching one of the nomidoes, the mold begins to cover the entire thing. Thinking he made it ‘a million times better’, Chowder proceeds to do the same to all the other.

When Mung sees them the next day, along with Chowder being covered in mold patches, he becomes completely shocked. When Chowder asks if Mung likes what he did, Mung states that he’s not happy with it and cries on the floor (Funjl lies and says he's crying tears of joy.) Wanting to take his new talent a step further, Chowder fuses with the pixie, making him into a giant mold monster. After seeing this, Mung Daal decides to use the Emergency Yeast and becomes a monster himself to go after them.

Chowder and Funjl go through Marzipan City and begin touching everything in sight, covering it all in mold. Soon enough, Mung catches up with them to confront them. But then Funjl whacks him with a building. Chowder is shocked by this and tries to help Mung, but finds himself unable to break free. The pixie, in turn, reveals his plot that he'd cover the whole world in mold, not spice. Chowder feels confused until Funjl states it was all a lie just to use him, which makes Chowder feel betrayed. Mung then gets up and fights back with the mold monster in an attempt to free his apprentice.

After a long grueling fight that destroys half the city, Chowder and the pixie defeat Mung causing him to shrink. Chowder feels guilty about what he did and Mung shows him a spot of mold under his arm, revealing he once used the pixie's 'spice', in order to impress his cooking master, Lo Mein (although his name was not mentioned in the episode.) The story makes Chowder tear up. Funjl however, is not interested in Mung's story and tries to proceed with his plan. However, Chowder, now infuriated, takes back control and beats up the shocked pixie while unknowingly returning to his normal self. Mung ends up putting the pixie back in the jar, so he doesn't cause anymore trouble. Chowder shakes the jar until Mung tells him the conflict is over.

Afterwards, the two head home and Mung praises Chowder for his efforts and says he'll make a great chef, but punishes him for the trouble he caused by “putting him in charge” of being grounded in his room.

Trivia[]

  • Moral: You don’t need magic ingredients to impress others. Just believe in yourself.
  • This episode is the first and only appearance of Funjl.
  • The plot shares some similarities with the classic tale of King Midas and the Golden Touch, in which a king is granted the power to turn everything he touches into gold.
  • The battle between Chowder/Funjl and Mung/Yeast parodies Japanese monster movies, and Mung represents the hero like Godzilla or Rodan.
  • When Chowder is looking for the fizzle spice, he walks past a skeleton wearing the same clothes as him, presumably one of the past apprentices before him.
  • When Mung mentions that the only way to get the fizzle spice is to go down the cellar, dramatic music plays showing reactions by Truffles, Gazpacho, Panini, Endive and a mugger turning to where the cellar is, with the mugger's victim quickly running away during his reaction.
  • This is the last puppet credit sequence to end with the phrase "Ya' don't know what you're missin' if ya' aren't in the kitchen".
  • In that regard, each half of the phrase is said by Chowder and Mung respectively instead of the other way around.

Quotes[]

Old Man #1: Move your queen there.

Old Man #2: Didn't I say I didn't need a blasted hint? Didn't I? Fine, I'll move my queen there.

Old Man #1: Checkmate. I win.

Old Man #2: Oh, I hate you so much.

Mung: Funjl, if you don't release Chowder, I'll have to introduce you to my friend, Mr. Fisty and his wife, Elaine.

Funjl: You're all talk, Mung. You never had the guts to...

Mung(grabs the snail car) Hold still, Funjl! Your ride is here! (slams the snail car on Funjl and Chowder's faces)

Chowder: Hey, Mung, I'm gonna make you pee your pants!

Funjl: Do you want to make him really happy?

Chowder: Yeah!

Funjl: Really, really happy?

Chowder: Yeah!

Funjl: Pee-his-pants happy?

Chowder: Oh, that's gross, but yeah!

Funjl: Then, you gotta think big!

Chowder: (Thinking)

Funjl: What are you doing?

Chowder: Thinking!

Funjl: Oh for the love of! (Dives inside Chowder, fusing with him.)

Mung: A great chef doesn’t need magic spice, a great chef just needs a great moustache.
